I built a sailing rig for my 17 foot aluminum canoe years ago. Larry Zuk helped me build the mast and spars. I purchased the sail from ACA. More information on canoe sailing can be found at the ACA site.

The sailing components consist of one leeboard along with the mast thwart as seen in the following pictures.  I don't use a rudder for steering; I use a paddle on the lee side of the canoe and shift my weight fore and aft to steer the canoe.

I found it easier to load the canoe over the rear of my car.
