Basic wiki editing

Overview

Adding text to your wiki pages is easy. Just select the Edit button at the top and bottom of the page. If you are not logged in to your wiki, you will first see the log in page. Enter your password and select Log In. Now you see the editing area for the page. Just start typing in your text. A blank line will create a new paragraph. When you are finished select the Save button at the top or bottom of the editing area and you will see your finished page in your web browser. To view a video tutorial of this process click here.

Simple mark-up

PBwiki lets you spruce up your page by easily creating bold and italic text, headers and lists.

  • Bold - To create bold text, surround the text with double * like this: **text I want to be bold**. When you save your page, the text will be bold.
  • Italic - To create italic text, surround the text with double ' like this: ''text I want to be italic''. When you save your page, the text will be italic.
  • Section Headers - Placing one, two or three exclamation points (!, !!, !!!) at the beginning of a line, followed by your text, will make different size section headers.
  • Lists - For normal bullet lists, start each line with a * followed by a space, followed by your text. For numbered lists, start each line with a # followed by a space, followed by your text.
  • Horizontal lines - To form a horizontal line, put 3 dashes on a blank line, ---

The following table contains a summary of basic wiki formatting:

EffectPrecedingTextFollowing
Bold**word**
Italic''word''
__Underlined____word__
Strikethrough - word -
* Bullet* sentence
# List # sentence

You can always get help while editing by selecting the Style Help link on the right side of the edit screen.

You can see how other user's wiki pages were created by selecting the "Page Source" link at the bottom of each page.

Creating links

It is very easy to create links in a wiki. Links to new or existing wiki pages are made by surrounding the name of the link with square brackets [ ] . When you save the page, you will see the links. If the link is to a new page, which doesn't exist yet, the link will have a dashed line under it. Clicking on the link to a new page, will take you to that page and automatically open the edit window, for you to begin typing. To view a video tutorial of this process click here

Internal wiki links can also be created using "CamelCase". If you use two capital letters in a word with lowercase letters in between (such as SandBox), PBwiki will automatically recognize the word as a link to a page. You can use whichever method (square brackets or "CamelCase") you like, to create your links.

Links to external websites can be entered with the full URL (such as http://pbwiki.com ) and the wiki will recognize them as a link.

How to create a new page in this wiki (2 ways)

1. Use CamelCase. You can type a word with SeveralCapitalLetters (or even type NewPage), which will automatically create a link to that page! A dashed underline means the page doesn't exist yet.

-or-

2. Use [brackets]. You can put [brackets] around any word to create a new page. For example, if you wanted a page named cars, you could just type [cars].
