Tanto tori

  • Do not fixate on the tanto. Look at the big picture.
  • Yokomen uchi gokkyo (omote & ura) - enter deep to block uke's strike. Your front foot should be as deep as uke's rear foot and your rear foot should be next to uke's front foot. Slide your rear foot fwd so it is next to uke's front foot. The most common fault with this technique is not entering far enough initially.
  • Tsuki gokkyo variant - Uke tsukis with his right hand. Irimi to uke's right side and block his elbow with your left hand; grab his wrist with your right hand like gokkyo. (The further you can curl your fingers around his wrist, the better for doing a gokkyo pin at the end). Tenkan and spin uke down to mat. You may have to pin uke's arm with your outside knee up off the mat, it you can't do the normal gokkyo pin.
  • Tsuki makiotoshi - Uke tsukis with his right hand. Irimi to the front of uke and atemi to uke's face with your right hand. Then grab his right wrist with your left hand and put your right arm under his right shoulder to do makiotoshi. Turn uke over face down and do a kneeling nikkyo ?? vertical pin
  • Tsuki taiotoshi (omote & ura) - Do just like normal taiotoshi. Nage remains standing for pin. The important thing is to immobilize uke's shoulder/arm against the mat. There were a couple of ways David removed the tanto. One he used his knee to push on uke's wrist until uke releases. The other he just pushed against the back of the blade until the tanto came free.

Shomen

  • Shihonage
  • kotegaeshi - 2 ways
  • Ikkyo into garuma (?) - take uke's elbow, step forward and throw
  • makiotoshi
  • old nikkyo - like ikkyo ura but grab like gokyo
  • tenkan, grab under wrist, lead uke around and go under his arm for sankyo
  • taiotoshi - control arm for pin

  • Shihonage
  • kotegaeshi
