Little house up north

Page history last edited by Dave Raftery 10 years, 6 months ago

Some day I want to buy an acre of land in NH, VT or ME and build a little cabin on it. A southern exposure near a lake would be ideal. For the house, I'm looking at a 32' long by 16' wide Victoria's Cottage placed on cement piers. The cottage would be similar to this one. The first floor would be living room, bedroom, kitchen and bath. I would have a small propane stove and possibly a propane refrigerator. The second floor would be a loft for sleeping / storage. I'd like to use 2x6 walls for the added insulation. I'd use a wood stove for heat. Electricity would not be a requirement; I would use batteries and solar. I also would not require a well; I will bring in drinking water. I'll use a cistern to collect rainwater off the roof; this water will be used to flush the toilet. I will pump water up into a tank on the second floor to get water pressure to flush the toilet. The biggest cost, other than building the little house, would be a septic system for the toilet.

The purpose is to have a place to retreat to for vacations or for hard times, and to leave a piece of property for future generations.
