Kodak Zi6 My Impressions

Some things I have learned using my Zi6

Trying to figure out how to open the battery compartment had me puzzled initially. There is no button to push. You have to slide the cover down toward the bottom of the camera. Then the cover pops open. The instructions should have an arrow indicating how to open the battery compartment.

The memory card went in easily. You have to pry off the memory cover with a finger nail. When pushing the cover back on, the card popped out a few times, but finally I got the right pressure for it to stay in place. Now I know how to remove the memory card !

Formatting the memory card:

  • Put the memory card in the video camera.
  • Press and hold the Delete and Review buttons at the same time, and turn on the camera. The Settings menu appears.
  • Using the joystick, scroll down to Format.
  • Select drive D for the memory card. (Drive A is for the internal memory.)
  • Press the joystick (OK button) to format the memory card.
  • When formatting is finished, turn the camera off and back on again.

The settings menu has multiple choices; many more than the 3 choices that other reviews spoke of.

I loaded the ArcSoft software from the camera. It did not auto load the software. I had to start the install program manually. The version of ArcSoft MediaImpression that I have on the Zi6 is 1.2.24.308. It only allows uploading of files from Zi6 and sending to Youtube. I'll need to load the CD to be able to edit movies. The raw MOV files can be played by Quicktime. They are very large too; I guess that's where the video compression comes in.

I haven't verified this yet but at HD60, a 4 G SD card holds 45 minutes, and at HD30 a 4 G SD card holds 60 minutes of video. I have a 8 G SD card, so my capacity should be double these.
