Kata tori, left shoulder grabbed (unless otherwise noted)

  • Sankyo - Place your left hand under uke's wrist with your thumb to the outside. (Sensei steps back, Yasu doesn't) Atemi to uke's face with your rt hand. Step forward passing under uke's rt arm and apply sankyo.

  • Ikkyo omote - step back with fwd left foot and atemi to face with rt hand. Atemi must be real to stop uke's motion and break his balance to his rear. With your rt arm, press down on uke's rt elbow, as you slide back on your left foot and lower your hips. This should bring uke to his knees. Now place your rt hand on uke's rt wrist and start pushing his rt elbow up into his ear doing ikkyo. Same thing for ura except step behind uke.

  • Nikyo - omote Start same as above. If uke drops his elbow, preventing you from doing ikkyo, do nikkyo. For nikkyo ura, step to the side with your left back leg and then move your rt leg behind your left so you can't get kicked in the groin.

  • Nikkyo - Left shoulder grabbed: step back with left foot, atemi with rt hand to face. Rt hand comes back on top of uke's grabbing hand. Twist to your rt and withdraw your rt foot from 12 to 6 o'clock. Place your left hand on uke's rt wrist. Your left elbow should be DOWN close to your left side protecting your ribs. This technique only requires the slightest pressure by the left hand. If uke's rt arm straightens out (you have pushed into him and he has resisted) move your left shoulder couterclockwise to establish a bend in his arm. Nikyo is a "drawing in" of uke's arm into your center. Uke's pinky should face his face (if he looks away it is hard to do nikyo) but you should still be to his side. Nikyo is a twisting motion like wringing a dishcloth.

  • Sankyo - Start same as above, you go to apply nikkyo and uke raises his elbow, switch into sankyo by reaching over with your left hand.

  • Old nikyo (kaiten nikkyo)(uchi and soto)
    • Uchi: Your left shoulder is grabbed. Put your left hand (forearm) over uke's wrist, pinning it to your shoulder. (try turning clockwise to break uke's balance if necessary) Atemi to face with your rt hand. Slide your left foot slightly to the outside (your left) to make enough room for you to step under his arm. Place your rt hand on uke's rt elbow and extend as you step under his rt arm. (think of backing under his arm). Then back thru the space with your left leg. Keep uke's wrist pinned to your shoulder and your rt wrist (arm) on his elbow (bringing / making it part of your body). Tenkan and bring uke down. Kneel down with your knee above his shoulder first.

    • Soto: uke grabs nage's left lapel, push uke's wrist outward with your rt hand and rotate his elbow up with your left hand. Irimi with left leg and rotate uke's rt shoulder down, keeping his wrist at your shoulder. Move your left hand to his triceps/shoulder and your rt hand to his elbow. Tenkan on your left foot and bring uke down. Kneel down on your left leg first.

    • Soto tenshin - left lapel grabbed, step back with left leg and cut down on uke's elbow with your rt hand. Then your right hand pushes uke's rt hand outwards and your left hand pushes his elbow up and over. Keep pushing uke's right wrist outwards in order to break his grip. Once uke is bent over, change your hands/arms to the nikkyo grip. Tenkan uke down to mat.

  • Sankyo - Left shoulder is grabbed. Place your left hand under uke's wrist (thumb to outside) (sensei steps back with the lead foot, Yasu doesn't) Atemi to face with rt hand. Step forward under uke's rt arm and apply sankyo.

  • Tenchi nage - grab uke's elbow and irimi doing tenchi nage

  • Kanai's double tenkan koshinage (hajiki goshi?): uke grabs your left shoulder. Put your left arm on top of uke's rt elbow (or grab his elbow from underneath) and your rt hand behind uke's left shoulder as you irimi to uke's rt side with your left foot. Do a tenkan. Then do another tenkan, bringing uke up on your hip and throwing him in koshinage.

  • Otoshi - uke grabs your rt shoulder with his left hand: take a short step to your rt with your rt foot and move your rt shoulder back to your rt rear (this will make your left shoulder move forward). This right shoulder withdrawal will put your left shoulder in contact with uke's upper arm (his left bicep). Step forward with your left foot (behind uke) and extend both your arms downwards (thumbs down) as you throw uke.

  • Kiri otoshi - From rt hammi, as uke comes in to grab your shoulder, step back with your fwd foot, grabbing underneath his elbow (if he attacks with his left and, grab his left elbow with your rt hand). Twist your hips sharply to your rt and cut down with your left hand on uke's left elbow. This is a big, leading motion. (Kiri means cutting down). Cut down and then move your arms up and outwards. If you cut down completely uke will breakfall and you come down on one knee and control uke's arm.

  • Kokyunage - left shoulder held, cut down on inside of uke's elbow with your left arm and turn to your right. Get all the slack out and then turn your hips back to your left.

  • Shihonage - Left shoulder is grabbed: Step back with left foot, atemi with rt hand to uke's face. Squat down and roll your head over the outside of uke's wrist, holding his wrist with your rt hand. As you pass under his arm, atemi with your left hand to uke's instep (Saito does a lot of this); rise up and complete shiho nage.

  • Maikiotoshi tenshin - Uke grabs your left shoulder with his rt hand. With your left hand grab uke's rt sleeve and step back with your left foot bringing uke's arm down low. Atemi to his face with your rt hand. Place your rt arm under uke's right shoulder and tenkan on your rt foot (counter clockwise). Your rt knee comes down to the mat. Uke is thrown at 90 degrees to his original position. Keep your arm tight against uke's arm. Another version is to pin uke's arm with your rt arm (between your rt forearm and bicep). Rest of technique is identical

  • kaitenage - Uke grabs your left shoulder with his rt hand. Step back with your left foot and atemi to his face with your rt hand. Your left hand should be placed underneath uke's rt wrist; your figers point upwards and your palm is facing uke. Do not grab his wrist just cradle it between your thumb and forefinger. That way your hand can rotate. Now raise his rt elbow with your rt hand and pass under his rt arm. Now bring his head down low in front of you and place your rt hand behind his neck. Raise his rt arm and perform kaitenage stepping thru with your left foot. When doing this technique in motion do not step back initially; just enter to your left side under his rt arm. This can also be done by pinning uke's rt hand against your shoulder with your left hand. (D Farrell)

  • shiho sabaki iriminage - tenkan on the side that is grabbed, keep your arm under uke's, you want his arm to bend, not stay straight, bend your knees to pass under his arm, your other arm comes up and does irimi nage. Uke's arm is wrapped around nage's head somewhat.

  • kata hiki otoshi - slide fwd to uke's side with your fwd leg. Place your other hand on his shoulder and step back 90 degrees with your back leg
